As technology reshapes the industry and AI becomes part of everyday design, tiles are finding new possibilities beyond their traditional role as building materials. Should they remain purely functional, or become spatial materials with warmth and character? Through the Zaimu design philosophy, the two designers offer an answer: what cannot be replaced is the aesthetic judgement, thought and human warmth embodied in a material.

Zhu Baiyang: There are different views on intelligent technology; this is not a question of right or wrong, but of what makes us happiest. Product design is similar. Whatever its brand or category, if you see a tile only as a tile, that is all it will ever be. If you see it as a considered material refined through ceramic craftsmanship, enjoy how it feels and looks, and use it thoughtfully, it can find its proper place and create a distinctive energy in a space, regardless of its thickness.

A tile's value extends far beyond its basic function as a surface covering.
Looking beyond the fixed label of 'tile' allows us to see a spatial material shaped by craftsmanship and design thinking, opening up a much wider understanding of its value.
A refined touch, an elegant visual texture and thoughtful coordination give a building material vitality. It finds its place in the room and creates a distinctive atmosphere. This is how design increases brand value and forms the first foundation of a design-led brand.

Zhu Baiyang: In designing Zaimu products, I do not keep telling myself that I am designing tiles. Their substance and manufacturing process are ceramic, of course, but I think of myself as creating materials. The process gives each surface thickness and personality. Whatever its size, I consider the character, texture and atmosphere it can bring to a space.

High-end design goes beyond shaping a product's appearance; it understands its nature and develops its intrinsic character.
Tile development must remain rooted in ceramic craftsmanship while moving beyond simply designing a product. Creating distinctive spatial materials with depth, texture and personality requires systematic thought about the overall character, material expression and atmosphere of the space.
Moving from designing tiles to creating spatial materials helps brands escape repetitive competition. It also enables a shift from selling building materials to offering expertise in spatial aesthetics, establishing a recognisable identity and stronger market competitiveness.

Zhu Yanqing: With a different understanding of value, the strength invested in a brand becomes more than the product's own value. It gains additional and symbolic value that AI cannot replace. Every new development has two sides; the key is using it appropriately.

AI can streamline design and improve delivery, but it cannot replace the additional and symbolic value a brand builds over time. Nor can it reproduce a designer's understanding of materials, sensitivity to space or emotional connections between people.
New technology brings both opportunities and challenges. AI deserves a thoughtful approach, avoiding unquestioning enthusiasm or resistance. Using technology to improve efficiency while keeping human values at the heart of design allows it to serve lasting design and brand value.
··· Closing Thoughts ···
The value of design
is to make a product more than a product,
giving materials character and soul.
AI is a tool, not the answer.
What makes a brand irreplaceable
is its aesthetic judgement, warmth and thought.
