Design Inspiration

In the Uyghur language of Xinjiang's Ili Valley, 'Atong' evokes a place beneath a shared moon. Local people's relationship with wood differs from that of farming societies. Wood is more than a material for permanent buildings: it brings warmth to home through saddle frames, dombra sound boxes, yurt doorways, bread trays and firewood for milk tea.

Atong Wood draws on this intimate understanding of timber. Moving away from monumental trees, the collection explores the warm, familiar traces created where wood meets nomadic everyday life.
